Middle School District Auditions

Hello,

I hope all are well.  We are coming close to the All-State/District Honor Band registration date of October 2.  Just a few reminders:

1.  All students that are auditioning for All-State, District Honor Band, or both must be registered in OPUS. Please find this step-by-step instruction guide for OPUS registration. October 2 is the last day that OPUS will allow you to enter students.

2.  Students who are auditioning for All-State and District Honor Band need to have that indicated in OPUS.  If you have previously registered for All State and did not pick the option for ASB/HB, you will need to correct that in OPUS. Remember that the deadline to register students for All-State and District Honor Band is the same this year (October 2).

3.  All students who are auditioning for All-State must be registered for the Honor Band audition also.

4.  Those who registered students for All-State and now need to add the Honor Band only students, you use OPUS and create a new All-State registration.  You will have the option to pick Honor Band only when you enter the student information. October 2 is the last day that OPUS will allow you to enter students.

5.  The DHB voucher is here.  Print it out and include a check made out to GMEA District 7 and send to the audition host (note change of address from previous years). Please do not skip this step—OPUS registration is not the final step. The fee is for the Honor Band auditions ($5 per audition).  The voucher must be mailed by the postmarked date of October 12. THIS IS THE FINAL DEADLINE.  NO REGISTRATION WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE OF OCTOBER 2 AND THE PAYMENT DEADLINE OF OCTOBER 12.  The student names must be included in OPUS by October 2.

6. It will not be necessary to send me a list of names.  All student names must be listed in OPUS. Please do send me a list of any students who have special needs (e.g. enlarged sightreading) even though this information is entered in OPUS.

Final Thoughts:
If you have questions or problems, NOW is the time to find the answer.  I know we are all busy but please be sure you understand the process.  Ask for help.  Brandie at the GMEA office is your OPUS information specialist.
Please do not give out my personal or school contact information.

Best of luck in navigating through this process,

Sam Simon

Dear Colleagues:

We are looking forward to hosting the District Clinic Band here at Model High School. The clinic date for this year is Saturday, April 28, 2018. This letter provides the information both you and your students need to prepare for this event in order to make this a successful experience for everyone. Enclosed are several sheets of important information. There are nomination sheets for both first and second year students. WE ASK THAT YOU LIMIT YOUR NOMINATIONS OF STUDENTS TO THE TOP 10 PERCENT FOR EACH EXPERIENCE LEVEL.

• When nominating your students, please list them in order of ability (Ex. #1 is your top student in your program). We will try to take as many students as possible to make a complete instrumentation, but we will not be able to take everyone.
• Please make sure that you get a commitment from the students you nominate to be available for the Clinic Band date.
• Do not substitute for missing students unless they play the same instrument.
• Please indicate with a circle around their number which students were participants in last year's clinic band.
• Please remember to only nominate students who have NOT been selected for the 7th District Honor Band.
• The deadline for the nominations will be Friday, March 23, 2018.
• We expect to have the bands selected by Friday, April 6, 2018 and will e-mail the list to you.
• Submissions: - If you wish to e-mail your nominations to me (BrCrider@floydboe.net), please use the same format as on the printed sheet. E-mailing is the best way to submit your nominations.
• I have also enclosed a letter explaining the audition requirements, and the prepared piece the students will need to play for their audition. The prepared piece for both bands is in the same key and written roughly along the same lines, so if you have mixed classes or wish to work with all of your students together on the prepared piece, they can play them at the same time.
• ALL SCALES MUST BE MEMORIZED (both 1st and 2nd year).
• The clinicians will be Mr. Travis Downs with the 1st year band and Mrs. Sheila Smith with the 2nd year band.
•  Each director who nominates students is REQUIRED to be in attendance and help with the chair placement auditions.
• Please make sure you MAIL the participation fee for your students by Wednesday, April 11. Cost is $10 for each student accepted. Please make the fees available in the form of ONE (1) school or booster check, payable to "GMEA DISTRICT 7." We will hold a personal check from you until the one from your school or boosters can be provided. PLEASE, DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE DAY OF THE EVENT TO PAY. Students will not be registered without the payment of the participation fee. Please do not have your parents pay for their child when they arrive.
• If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by phone or e-mail.

I am looking forward to seeing you at Model High School on Saturday, April 28, 2018.

Sincerely,

Brandi Crider,Band Director, Model Middle School Band
